The Best Western Hotel Carlos V Madrid is a delightful hotel with a real feeling of history to it. The receptionist proudly told me that the building is 100 years old, although the interior was renovated in the year 2000, the hotel has kept hold of its majestic ambiance. It’s an attractive building in a peaceful pedestrian street right off the main commercial shopping street in the centre of Madrid.

I can only describe the reception area as magical. It has the sky painted on the ceiling, and curtains painted on the far doors. All the lights are golden, and the result is like something out of a fairy tale. There is also a useful rack of information leaflets about tourist attractions, and English language leaflets about the city. Plus the receptionist was very knowledgeable about the area and the hotel.

Hotel Facilities

The Hotel Carlos V Madrid offers: a sumptuously decorated café-bar (they serve cocktails as well), money exchange, car rental, fax service, airport shuttle and there is public parking next to the hotel.

I couldn’t think of a more perfect location for a hotel if you want to see some of Madrid’s most emblematic buildings and have access to nightlife and shopping. The Hotel Carlos V Madrid is in the heart of the area known as ‘Madrid de los Austrias’, which is the area between Gran Via and Puerta del Sol. Within a 20 minutes stroll you can go to the Royal Palace, and in just 10 minutes walk you’re at the Plaza Mayor, which is alive with artists, street entertainers, bars and restaurants.

Opposite the hotel is a small aquarium, and if you turn left out of reception you’ll only have to walk 20 metres to the main shopping street that stretches between Gran Via and Puerta del Sol. Right out of reception takes you on a more tranquil route to the picturesque Plaza de las Descalzas, where you’ll find a monastery and a branch of the Thyssen-Bornemisza art museum.

For all the tapas bars and restaurants you could want, head for the main shopping street and down to Sol square. It’s only 1 minuet walk to the big El Corte Ingles department store, where there’s a supermarket, bookshop and clothing and electrical goods.

How To Get From The Airport To The Hotel

Via Taxi: A taxi from the airport should take about 30 minutes and cost 22 to 25 euros (including airport supplement), depending on how much traffic there is, and assuming there is no excess baggage (that it all fits inside the boot and interior of the taxi).

Via metroMetro: You can take various metro routes directly from the airport to arrive at Callao metro near the Hotel Carlos V Madrid. Line number 8 leaves from inside the airport between terminals 1 and 2. The quickest route is given below with the stations where you need to change listed:

metroMetro: Mar de Cristal (Pink Line, L8) Then change and head for Diego de Leon (Brown Line, L4) Then change and head for Callao (Green Line, L5).

Via Bus: You can take a red EMT public bus from the airport to Avenida America. The number bus that takes this route is the 115. From there it’s quicker to change to the metro.
